Whether we use self care or treatments like acupuncture or herbal therapy, A holistic approach is a well rounded approach.
Whether we use self care or treatments like acupuncture or herbal therapy, A holistic approach is a well rounded approach.

The word “holistic” gets thrown around a lot. Sometimes accurately, sometimes not. Many people associate holistic care with alternative medicine, trendy wellness fads, or unscientific practices. But true holistic medicine is much deeper than that. It’s about treating the whole person, addressing your symptoms and the health challenges that are keeping you from getting better on your own.

At Acupuncture of West Michigan, we take a truly holistic approach, using acupuncture and herbal therapy not just to treat symptoms but to improve overall well-being, and even prevent future health issues. Let’s debunk some common misconceptions about holistic health and reframe them through the lens of acupuncture and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine).

Misconception #1: Holistic Means Alternative or Unscientific

Many people assume holistic health rejects conventional medicine in favor of alternative methods. In reality, true holistic care doesn’t ignore modern medicine it complements it.

The Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Perspective

While acupuncture has a rich history dating back over 2500 years, modern acupuncture is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  TCM is the ‘new’ medicine in China and doctors trained there study western (allopathic medicine), pharmaceuticals, surgery, as well as acupuncture and herbs.  It is rooted in science and backed by decades of research demonstrating its effects on pain relief, inflammation reduction, hormone regulation, and nervous system balance. Likewise, herbal therapy has been extensively studied for its benefits in digestive health, immunity, and chronic disease management.

Instead of replacing conventional care, we enhance it, helping patients manage pain, and improve their health challenges that may be getting in the way of their ability to heal and stay healthy on their own. You can use acupuncture on it’s own or easily combine it with conventional care or other therapies.

Misconception #2: Holistic Just Means Natural Remedies

Many assume holistic care is just about taking supplements, drinking green juices, or using essential oils. While many holistic therapies are natural, its more about the underlying thinking about how your symptoms and conditions are interrelated.

The Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Perspective

Holistic care means understanding how the body functions as a whole. Acupuncture isn’t just about pain relief it works on the nervous system, immune function, hormones, and circulation. By getting at the underlying causes of your chronic issues, we can offer more than just temporary relief.  For example, chronic pain isn’t always about inflammation alone. It could be linked to stress, poor digestion, or hormone imbalances - all things acupuncture and herbs can regulate naturally.

Misconception #3: Holistic Healing Ignores Western Medicine

Some believe that holistic medicine means rejecting doctors, medications, or diagnostic testing. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Perspective

We believe in integration, not isolation. Acupuncture works exceptionally well alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, or medical treatment for conditions like arthritis, migraines, and autoimmune disorders. Herbal therapy can help counteract the side effects of necessary medications and support long-term healing.

For example, women experiencing perimenopause often get prescribed hormone therapy. However, acupuncture and herbs can naturally support hormone balance, easing symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and insomnia sometimes reducing the need for medication altogether.

Misconception #4: Holistic Care Is Just a Trendy Buzzword

Unfortunately, the term “Holistic” has been misused by the wellness industry, sometimes turning into a vague marketing term with no real meaning.  Even conventional healthcare settings use the word “holistic” to tell people that they are interested in working on every component of health.

The Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Perspective

Chinese medicine has been around for thousands of years, long before “holistic” became a wellness trend. What makes acupuncture and herbal medicine truly holistic is the way it treats not just symptoms, but the entire system.

  • Chronic headaches? We don’t just address the pain, we look at digestion, circulation, and stress levels.

  • Hormonal imbalances? Instead of just treating PMS or menopause symptoms, we work to regulate the entire endocrine system naturally.

  • Chronic fatigue? We assess underlying factors like digestion, adrenal health, and emotional well-being to restore true energy levels.

Acupuncture is not a holistic trend, it’s a comprehensive, time-tested approach to health. It’s effects are usually long lasting - not just a band-aid approach.
